What is SustainCEL?
Nine Pillars of Sustainability Education
Connect, Explore, Lead
SustainCEL is a comprehensive K–12 sustainability education framework organized around nine interconnected pillars and four developmental grade bands.
It is a structured, adaptable approach that helps schools integrate sustainability thinking across subjects and grade levels in ways that are meaningful and lasting. SustainCEL moves learners beyond awareness and into informed participation through inquiry, systems thinking, and action. Because sustainability should not live in isolation, it should become part of how students Connect, Explore, and Lead.
9 Pillars of SustainCEL
Each pillar moves students from scientific understanding to systems thinking, from honest questions about human impact to real opportunities for action. Together, they build something that outlasts any single lesson or unit.
Students who move through SustainCEL don’t just learn about sustainability. They learn to think, ask, and act like people who understand what is at stake.
-
Students learn to see themselves inside something larger. The nested model at the heart of this pillar places nature as the foundation, society within it, and the economy within that. Learners begin thinking in relationships rather than isolated parts.
-
From ecosystems to energy cycles, students build the scientific understanding needed to interpret the natural world and make informed decisions within it.
-
Every choice creates impact. This pillar examines how individual and collective decisions shape the environment and the world. It also asks students to view our Earth from different perspectives.
-
Sustainability cannot exist without equity. This pillar examines how environmental decisions affect communities unevenly and how students can advocate for change.
-
Students examine how emerging technologies and entrepreneurial thinking are shaping a more sustainable future.
-
This pillar provides students with a structured process for solving real-world problems. Starting with empathy and moving through iteration, learners design solutions grounded in how people actually live.
-
Nature is not simply something to study. It is a teacher. This pillar gets students outside, where observation and wonder do work that no classroom can replicate.
-
Students expand their perspective to the global scale, examining how economic decisions made close to home connect to systems thousands of miles away.
-
Sustainability learning can feel overwhelming without hope. This pillar ensures it does not stop at what is broken. Students build the resilience and agency to believe they have a role in fixing it.
Each of the nine SustainCEL pillars is built around a set of core concepts that guide what students explore and how they engage with the world around them. Scroll through to see what learning looks like inside each pillar.

SustainCEL Standards Alignment
SustainCEL aligns with the national standards educators already know and use. Rather than competing with required standards, SustainCEL strengthens them by connecting learning to authentic, real-world systems and challenges.
